Setting up for exams and assessments

Please note: We recommend using PDF Aloud for Adobe for exams. See below for how to set this up.

Installation

When using Read&Write within exam or assessment situations you will often need to limit certain features that students can use. You can do this using the Teachers Toolkit. The toolkit should be installed on at least one machine to manage users. There are two installation methods you can follow:

  • On a network
    1. Prior to installation you will need to ensure you create an Admin and Users folder in a shared location where all users will have access (ie on a network or server share)
    2. Run the Read&Write Installer and go through the registration details.
    3. Select Managed Users and ensure to select Install Teachers Toolkit.
    4. Enter in folder paths for both Admin and Users folder which were created in shared location prior to installation.
    5. Follow through the rest of the installation. Once complete open the Teachers Toolkit and select the Import Users tab. From here tick the option Allow autocreation of user accounts for users with valid windows login. This will allow users to be automatically created when Read&Write is opened within their profile.

  • On a standalone machine
    1. Prior to installation you will need to ensure you create an Admin and Users folder in a shared location where all users will have access. On a stand alone machine we recommend creating these folders under C:\Users\Public.

**Now follow the above steps 2 - 5 to complete the rest of the installation**

Exam Papers

When using exam papers with Read&Write it is important to prepare the paper so it can be read by the Read&Write software.  There are two options you can take: scan a paper directly from Read&Write or scan a document already in digital format so the text can be read.

  • To scan an exam paper through Read&Write using a scanner:
  1.
    1. From the scan dropdown list select your output format Scan to PDF.
    2. Then choose Scan from Twain.
    3. Click the scan icon on toolbar and follow the steps to scan the document.

**Note if scanning a multi page document you can change how the pages are scanned under scanning options from the dropdown list. You can choose to scan multiple pages (with prompt) or (with countdown).

  • To scan an exam already in digital format (or from an image) follow steps below:
  1.
    1. From the scan dropdown list select your output format Scan to PDF.
    2. Then choose Scan from file.
    3. Click the scan icon on toolbar and follow through steps of choosing file to convert and saving it. The OCR conversion process will then take place and complete.

Using PDF Aloud with Adobe

To change the default PDF Aloud viewer back to Adobe you need to create a blank file in notepad and call it thpdfviewer.dat. Then place this file in the Admin folder created and specified during installation. When PDF Aloud is used it will then open with Adobe instead of the Read&Write PDF Aloud.
